EC-422 FIBRE OPTICS COMMUNICATION (B.Tech 8th Semester, 2052) Time : 3 Hours Maximum Marks : 60 NOTE:- This paper consist of Three Sections. Section A is compulsory. Do any Four questions from Section B and any two questions from Section C Section-A Marks : 20 1(a) At what wavelength, the attenuation is minimum ? (b) What is total internal reflection ? (c) What is graded index fibre ? (d) What are the general dimensions of core and cladding for single mode fibre ? (e) What are dispersion flattened fibres ? (f) What is numerical aperture ? (g) What is unit of dispersion ? (h) What are bending losses ? (i) What are preamplifiers ? (j) Define SNR and BER. Section-B Marks:5 Each 2. Explain edge emitting and surface emitting diodes. 3. Discuss the various dispersion mechanism that contribute to pulse broadening during the fibre transmission. 4. What are parameters considered for designing an optical reciever ? Explain their importance. 5. What are various modulation techniques used in optical communication system ? Explain any one in detail. 6. Explain method for measuring dispersion in optical fibre system. Section-C Marks : 10 Each 7. Explain the difference between absorption and scattering process as they determine the attenuation of optical power propagating in the fibres. Outline the principle mechanism involved in each case and indicate their relative importance in different types of fibres at different optical wavelengths. 8. How will you measure : (a) Refractive index people (b) Attenuation (c) Fibre diameter in an optical communication system ? 9. Write short notes : (a) Power budgetting (b) Mode theory (c) Optical Transmitter circuit. |
