WTO IS NOT A GLOBAL GOVERNMENT, SAYS MARAN
Dhoa, Nov 10. The Univon Commerce Minister, Mr. Murasoli Maran, today
reiterated India's opposition to a comprehensive new round of trade talks at the WTO that
would deal with "nontrade issuses" such as foreigh investment, competition
policies and environment, and asked the Doha ministerial confernce to instead give a clear
mandate for addressing the trade problems of the developing countries.
"The WTO is not a global government and should not appropriate to itself what legitimately falls in the domain of national governments and Parliaments, said Mr. Maran in his strongly worded address to the plenary session of the ministerial conference which today began its substantive work of trying to reach an agreement on a ministerial declaration. The Commerce Minister said India and other developing countries " are not ready to accept a new set of onerous commitments" that will arise from negotiating agreements on non-trade issues. Mr.Maran said that while all countries wanted the Doha meeting to be a success, this shoud not mean the adoption of an agenda that would "split" the WTO membership. - Thanks THE HINDU

SERVICES DISRUPTED
CHENNAI, NOV 10. The strike by transport corporation employees in the
State was almost total today with a mojority of them abstaining from work protesting
against the government decision to sanction 8.33 per cent bonus as against 20 per cent
given last year. As all major unions, except the Anna Thozhir Sanga Peravai affiliated to
the AIADMK, joined the strike, transport services in the State were almost paralyed.
However, the Transport Minister, Mr. Nainar Nagendran, claimed that about 25 percent of the services were in operation till noon and they increased to about 75 per cent by night. As more and more employees expressed their willingness to join duty, the situation, according to him would return to normal by Sunday. Though, the corporation managements, along with the police, made elaborate arrangements for operating normal services, the plan went haywire as employees stuck to their strike plan. Not only city and town buses but also long distance services were off the road, causing inconvenience to the travelling public. With Deepavali round the corner, passengers going home for the festival were the worst-hit. - Thanks THE HINDU.
