Our Purpose
The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among associate degree students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunities for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate to exchange ideas and ideals for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing excellence.
Phi Theta Kappa has been recognizing academic achievement in two-year colleges since 1918. Phi Theta Kappa has chartered over 1100 chapters, and inducted its one-millionth member in 1993. Phi Theta Kappa chapters are located on campuses in all fifty states of the United States, Canada, U.S. Territorial possessions and military installments abroad. It is the only internationally acclaimed honor society serving institutions which offer associate degree programs. Two-year college presidents and administrators of associate degree programs in four-year schools have continually recognized membership in Phi Theta Kappa as an honor and a privilege. Membership is given added significance by the fact that the Society is recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official general honor society for two-year colleges.
Phi Theta Kappa members come from different backgrounds. The average member is 29, yet the age range is from 18-80. Some were in the top ranks of their high school graduating classes; others were once dropouts. Many are re-entry students who are getting a second chance at education, some attending college for the first time. The majority of members are permanent residents of the United States or Canada, but many mare international students who have left their native countries solely to attend college. Some plan an academic career that will include graduate school; others will end thier formal education at the two-year college level.
