Things We've Done
Wednesday, December 20
As a service project, the Beta Iota Pi Chapter sponsored a Winter Coat Drive. Gamma Beta Phi Society worked with us and drop boxes were also set up in the community. An average of 40 coats were donated and went to The Lighthouse and The Beacon, otherwise known as the Women's Shelter and Men's Shelter of Cleveland County. The children's coats donated went to the Women's Shelter since there are lots of children there with their mothers. Everyone's donations were greatly appreciated.

The American Cancer Society hosts the Great American Smokeout every November to help prevent tobacco-related cancer from continuing. We set up a booth for display and accepted pledges for smokers to quit smoking for as long as they thought they could last and for nonsmokers to not start smoking. The number of pledges will be posted soon. We also asked the afterschool daycare at Elizabeth Elementary School to have all their children to draw and color picture showing why you should not smoke. All of the picture turned out great and creative. We told them they would be put in a contest and there would be one winner from each grade. The winners will be announced soon.

Phi Theta Kappa was founded November 19, 1918 so we decided to have a celebration for this occasion. It took place in the Cleveland Community College gymnasium from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. There was a theme of Mardi Gras so beads and masks were distributed. The winning raffle ticket for the Xbox was drawn and the winner was John Bowen from Granite Falls. Five other raffle tickets were also drawn and golf tickets from Riverbend Golf Course and Victory Junction Gang T-shirts were given to them. Bobby Robers received the golf tickets and the shirts went to Dennis Parker, Linda Granger, Terry Russell, and Edwin Clemmons.

The HOOPS FOR LIFE Charity Basketball Tournament was held at the Shelby High School gym. There were six teams in the tournament and there was also a 3-Point Shootout and a Free Throw Contest. Trophies were awarded to the contest winners and to the top three teams in the tournament. The champions were the team, Liberty, which included Kenny Walker, Seth Rickersten, and Tim Barnsback. Express came in second place and included Ryan Garland, Joey Dockery, Scott Mitchell, Henry Byrd, and Mario Harrison. Unfortunately, Henry Byrd was injured in the first half so Mario Harrison was his replacement. Coming in third place was the Muresans, consisting of Derrick Lail, Eric Lail, Danny Anderson, and Patrick Watson. Other teams were the #1 Stunnas with Brad Atkins, Joe Hubbard, Burgan Griggs, and Aaron Boggs, the Dream Team-Plus One with Neal Payne, Adam Page, Geoffrey Hamrick, and Harry Washburn; and the Lakers with Charles Williamson, Scott McKinney, Kyle Hamrick, and Opie Earls. A Member Appreciation Fall Bash was held at Challenger III Family Entertainment Center. Activites at discount prices were offered from 4 pm until closing time. Pizza was provided at the picnic area and those who came had a great time. This was the officers way of telling the members that they are appreciated and to let the members know that the officers want to make a fresh start. We want you to know that we want to make a difference, but we want to have fun while doing it!
