| "PRECIOUS" LIFE: GROUND ZERO KITTY FOUND ALIVE | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Have you heard about Precious, the cat that everyone is calling the "miracle Kitty?" DJ and Steve Kerr, her owners, believed that their beloved white Persian had surely perished when the Twin Towers collapsed on September 11th. Their badly damaged apartment was at ground zero right across the street. But it seems that this feisty feline has the proverbial nine lives, after all. On Saturday night, September 29, 18 days later, rescuers responding to a report of a cat crying, rescued the terrified 9-pound feline from the debris on the roof of the apartment building, with the help of one of the rescue dogs. Rescuers took her to the nearby Suffolk County SPCA van, which had been treating rescue and search dogs for exhaustion and exposure. Chief Roy Gross called Precious' survival simply "miraculous." Precious suffered eye injuries, burns to her paws and smoke and dust inhalation, but is expected to make a good recovery. Apparently she was able to stay alive by lapping from puddles of contaminated rainwater. "It's unbelievable. It's a miracle. I can't believe she's alive," said DJ. She and her husband Steve were out of town when the Twin Towers collapsed. A house sitter had been due to arrive at 10 a.m. that morning to take care of Precious, who had never been outside before. Their seven-story building on Liberty Street has been damaged extensively and will be unfit for occupancy for at least nine months. "She lost two pounds and her little paws are burned on the bottom because the top of the building was so hot, but she's going to live," DJ said with a big smile. "I gave her favorite food - sliced turkey." said DJ. "She was eating so fast because she was starved to death and she's drinking a lot of water... but she's so happy, she's just purring." In the midst of all the destruction, there was at least one survival story and a happy reunion of a beloved cat and cat lover. I know the Kerrs are feeling blessed to have their very "Precious" one returned to them. I only wish that more rescue stories like this could have been repeated... 6000 times over..... |

| This is what is happening to thousands and thousands of animals in NYC. I urge you to post this message to everyone you know. I have been going to CACC since they opened. In all my years of rescue from this shelter, I have NEVER seen what was witnessed yesterday. Cars were double-parked up and down the block on 110th Street. Inside the shelter, the lobby was completely FULL with people dropping off animals. It seems many people for whatever reason (fear or possible damage to homes) are suddenly "moving" out of the city and cannot take their animals. An unusually high number of "strays" also suddenly coming in:Five Purebred Chow Chows, Pomeranians and many other breeds. Sharon at the CACC showed me a smallish pure Collie who looked just like a scruffed up version of Lassie. This very sweet, senior dog had just come in as "stray." (We put a memo on her.) Cats, moms and litters were also everywhere. Many of them suddenly abandoned after years in a home. The computers are still down at CACC. There is pitifully scant information on the animals' cards. Though we can surmise many of these now-homeless pets are actual or indirect victims of the WTC tragedy, such is not indicated on their kennel cards. Many of the groups or individuals who have offered to "help WTC animals" will not help these as "WTC" is not noted on the cards. I was also informed today that a number of the animals in evacuated buildings around the ground zero area have been abandoned by caregivers. Or, perhaps the guardians have perished. In any event, no one has stepped up to claim the animals. We have tried to put memos on a number of animals, regardless of the noted "reason" they are there. But, we do NOT have sufficient offers or placement for them. I am putting out this e-mail to bring light to the fact, that an incalculable number of animals ARE coming into CACC as a result of the WTC tragedy. However, since the info on them does not state this, I am concerned that the truth will not "get out" to all those who have offered to help these pets. People who want to help these animals need to be CONTACTING ALL RESCUE GROUPS and SHELTERS in New York WHO TAKE CACC pets, including ours, NYCA. Most are listed on www.petfinder.org Or, if in New York, they can adopt directly from the shelter. Please forget about requirements that the animals "be victims of the WTC tragedy." Trust me, they ARE. Patty (New Yorkers for Companion Animals) (212) 427-8273. --- If you know of an animal that has been abandoned due to this attack or due to other circumstances, here is their emergency telephone hotline number: Emergency No: 1-888-LOST123 Note: Please do not call the CACC on this line for any other reasons than to report an abandoned animal. | Let's write letters to the editor in order to bring attention to the crisis of abandoned animals that has resulted from the NYC/WTC tragedy. As you know, make sure to include your full name, address, and phone number. If sending a letter to more than one paper, please don't just cc them the same e-mail. Instead, copy & paste the letter onto separate e-mails before sending it out. Publications frown upon seeing the same letter being sent to other publications and will not print it. Thanks! source: DTanzer Sample Letter: Sir, The outrageous bombing of the WTC has led to more than just human victims. Unfortunately, the shelters in NYC are being in-undated with pets. Some of these are from people leaving the city and unable or unwilling to take them with them. This, together with, the strays picked up due to people abandoning their pets in the streets and also presumably because of the deaths of their owners has led to desperate situation concerning these animals. Could I ask you to publish this letter, or preferably publish an article to draw people's attention to this tragic by-product of the attack last week. These thousands of animals will be killed if a solution cannot be found to re-locate them in one way or other. We have had enough death in the last week and do not need to add to it when it could be avoided. Yours faithfully |

| From Marjorie Cramer: I just heard from Dr. Jenny Ripka of the CACC who has been working tirelessly to get animals to safety. She reports that the remaining animals who are locked in are few and that warrants are being obtained to break down the doors to get to them. I know it is terribly late, but those who are postering might want to target recent immigrants who may not have many people here looking for them but who have left companion animals (Livvy French has been amazing and tireless in leafleting.) Apparently some people opted not to go back and retrieve their animals with them but asked that the animals stay in the apartments. These animals ("property " that they are) have been allowed to roam free in the hallways of apartment building and are being fed and watered. Good news is that the CACC computer is still down so they cannot kill! It will probably be about a week before they begin killing again. The ASPCA has a new hotline, I am told. As yet I do not have the number, so hopefully someone will post it. A good no-kill shleter is BARC (718-486-7488) Remember that in the weeks to come, many people, especially older people, will almost certainly develop stress related illnesses and some of them may be hospitalized or die, leaving animals. We should all be aware of this. Finally, a reminder to those who have worked so hard to take care of yourself. Some of you have really been on the front lines and you should remember to spend time with friends, get a massage, take a walk in the good weather, read a good book or whatever it takes.
