Learning Styles, CALL and the Israeli EFL Curriculum

Introduction

The English Curriculum lists about 70 principles underlying language learning, teaching, choice of material, tasks and assessment.
One of the principles states that “Language teaching is more effective when teachers… are aware of and sensitive to pupils' diversity and cater to it”. During this session you are going to explore one aspect of the issue of pupil diversity.

Tasks

Think about your own learning style. Copy and paste a picture into a WORD document and write about its connection to your learning style.
Read advice columns for teenagers. Copy a letter of advice found on the Internet and paste it into a WORD document. Write your own advice about the topic you chose.
Plan your own lesson to use in your classroom

Online material

  1. Reflect on your personal learning style
  2. Look at the lesson plan we prepared for you about writing letters of advice.

Reflection

It’s time to reflect on implementing lessons of this type:
What is it about this lesson that makes it teachable?
What is it about this lesson that makes it difficult to teach?
Did you like being a student having this lesson "done" to you?
Was it engaging? Did it inspire you? Why or why not?
How does the duplicated lesson plan do a better job teaching than the traditional method?

Where Do I Go From Here:

Make plans to prepare a lesson for your pupils which will integrate computers. You will need to do some pre-computer work and some post-computer work too.  In the first session we looked at two different types of lessons. One was available online on our site and the other was duplicated and given to each participant. In the second session we used one or two PowerPoint slides to introduce the topic of our lesson.

Your First Assignment

  • Choose the topic that interests you and then create a lesson plan that integrates use of computers.
  • Create a trigger or prediction exercise in PowerPoint.
  • Hand these in to Frida and Gail by bringing them to class on diskette or sending them to our course's email address: [email protected]
