| Hello everyone. My Dad was in a very serious car accident in April of this year and suffered severe head injury. He was in a coma for about a month, and suffered brain damage as a result of his accident. He has been in & out of hospitals and rehabilitation centers throughout the year. He is currently at Hinsdale Hospital in Hinsdale, Illinois. He has a lot of memory loss and problems with short-term memory and orientation. Often he is aggitated and angry. He can eat and talk, but he is unable to walk or use his hands. He suffers from severe spasticity. My Dad had surgery today and they inserted a pump in his back which releases a medication called Baclofen to help reduce his spasticity. It is supposed to be very successful in a lot of patients because the pump directly releases the medication through his spinal cord. Hopefully this will work for my Dad so he can continue therapy without pain & stiffness. He is at risk of getting placed in a nursing home because prior to the surgery he was not showing a lot of progress in therapy. My famly & I feel that a nursing home is not the answer for him (he is only 54 years old). However, if this new medication does not reduce his spasticity, we may have no choice until we can arrange care for him at home. I welcome any advice that anyone has and would love to hear from anyone who has went through this with a loved one. Thank You. |
