The final installment of ESPN's Greatest Athletes of the Century has been done.
We are pleased to bring you . . . Scott Maxwell *** (see bottom as well) - The Legendary Tales.
. . . an excerpt from the program . . Interview with Hall of Fame flag football punter,
David Cohn . . .
"Yeah, Scott and I have worked out together. When asked how much weight he
wanted on the bench press he answered 'How much are you lifting?'. It was
that kind of work ethic that propelled Scott to the pinnacle of athletic
achievement. He didn't work particularly hard, but he made up for it by
not caring about 'results'.
I was privileged to have played pickup football with Scott on the hallowed
grounds of Bearden High. We were just happy to be on the same field with
him. The things he could do with a football, a blowtorch, and butter . . .
well, let's just say this is a family program so there's no need for
details.
Scott could have been an Olympian but those high-brow bastards never agreed
on dwarf tossing as an official Olympic sport. He was robbed but dealt
with dissapointment as only Scott could . . . with class. They didn't want
him to win! If only he'd been at Munich in '72 those terrorists would have
had Scott to deal with. He could have changed the world . . . for the
better. You know he's the one that brokered the Paris Peace Accords, don't
you?? Sure, everybody SAYS Kissinger did it BUT I WAS THERE! It was Scott
staring those Ho Chi Minh bastards in the eye! He wouldn't back down!
Give me a second here . . . I'm tearing up . . . . There, I'm OK . . No, I
WANT to go on . . . Scott's story must be told.
Scott was a one-of-a-kind athlete, ahead of his time. His propensity for
urination on furniture alone warrants his Hall of Fame selection. Were it
not for the prejudices of the voting public he would be enshrined in
Cooperstown for baseball, Canton for football, and St. Petersburg for golf.
Unfortunately for him the 'Hot Tamale' incident was leaked to the papers,
killing any chance of his nomination. In my opinion, the three greatest
athletes with a lifetime ban to the Hall of Fame - Shoeless Joe Jackson,
Pete Rose, and Scott Maxwell."
