As part of my winter project of restoring the wiring to full working order i decided to do the little door plunger switches. These are very simple and may still work on your car but they didnt on mine so i will cover the steps i went through to get them working again. I found a half done walk through on zhome.com but it was hard to understand without pictures and as i said it was only half done. Below you will see the steps i went through, feel free to e-mail me with any questions.
I started by removing the door switches, this was easy, i just removed the kick panels and then I just pushed the switch out from the back using a little up and down wiggling motion. Above is a picture of the driver side switch removed.
This is the passenger side switch, it is a little different from the driver side one. I used the same proces to remove it from the door.
The next step is to take the switches apart, you do this my first removing the screw that hold the wires to the plunger. On the driver side make sure you pay attention to the order in which the wires are on the plunger and where the little plastic washers go. Then bend the little metal tabs around the top of the switch up and pry the top off. After this the whole switch will come apart.
This same process was followed for the passenger side switch. In the pictures you can see all the parts for the two switches, my springs were no good so i went to the hardware store and got new springs that just fit over the plastic plunger, this eliminates the washers found in the driver side switch. These springs cost me $0.30 each. They were a little longer then the stock springs but they still worked ok.
This is the two switches cleaned and put together, i used the two dremel attachments in the pic to clean them. I used the wire brush attachment on the outside tube untill it was shiny again as well as on the little metal ring that goes on top and the wire connectors that screw to the the back of the plunger, basicly all the metal parts. I used the little grinder wheel to clean the inside of the main tube because mine was coated in thick rust. I coated all the contact points in dielectric grease after putting everything together. I also used a multimeter to check the circit after puting the switches back together and after putting them in the car. When i put the switches back in the car i used a file to clean out the mounting hole and then coated it with the dielctric grease too. I dont have pics of this unfortunetly but im sure you can figure it out.
