Horror is not a genre, it is not a style, it is not a category. Horror is a state of mind, a means of venturing to territory otherwise too dangerous to investigate. This is proven true by the fact that there are people in this world who cannot bring themselves to the dark pages of a horror novel (saddly, for us writers, these are the people who are terrified most by the frightening stories we write), while there are other people who have the state of mind for the unseen darkness which lurks every corner. These people purposely scare themselves, in fact, envision themselves in the horrific situations they read about.
Then there are those that live for horror, who must get scared from time to time. Those who somehow work out a symbiotic relationship with their own adrenalyn. These people WILL walk down that darkened alley to get home faster, even if they have to run through it. These people will purposely put themselves in dangerous situations, all the while pondering the most horrific events possible to their surroundings, saturating themselves in their own adrenalyn until their muscles tense and their breathing becomes irregular. Most humourous is that these people generally don't know they do this, and if they do, they are told they are sick with anxiety or paranoya. It is to these people, who would venture to places unimaginable, that I thank for their addiction to horror.
Horror is your drug and I am your pusher. You'd best prepare yourself for the best high of your life!
