ROMA -
[Joy but also riots and some acts of
violence in Rome, which was in a cheerful mood, to-night - related to the
World Cup's victory] Due i luoghi al centro dei tafferugli:
piazza del Popolo e Campo dé Fiori. Gruppi di teppisti hanno
lanciato bottiglie
sgomberare l'intera
piazza [Two were the spots at the
center of the riots: Piazza del Popolo and Campo dei Fiori. Groups of
hooligans threw bottles at the police and, when the situation seemed to
get out of control, was decided to charge the hooligans and to evacuate
the Piazza].
ricominciata. [At Piazza del Popolo
we had a real urban war. It is possible that the crowd, which was
evacuated from Campo dei Fiori made it there, and joined the 300-400
people already present in the place. Caos exploded when a group of
holigans attacked the police station throwing bottles and bombs. The
police, whose task was to protect the Piazza, responded charging the
crowd with tears-bombs, due to the hooligans' determination not to
evacuate the place. After some
moments of high tension, the merry-feast was resumed]
lievemente contuso.

Meaning,
they were so joyous of having successfully acted out the heroic deed,
which is
part of the ritual of puberty rites, to explode in an orgy of
destructive
behavior. However, why to be destructive
in a joyful occasion? Riots are usually associated with frustration and rage,
and not
with gratification and success. We can understand this odd behavior only reconnecting

to their original context: the puberty rites of primitive peoples.
Dealing
with the puberty rites in the tribes of savages, Theodor Reik writes:
The young
people on whom are impressed the laws and moral
code of the tribe which they have henceforth to observe, are given the
opportunity to ‘have their fling’ once more. In
Furthermore, at the conclusion of a successful puberty
rite, the novices are granted sexual license[2].
The Cup, as every container, is an obvious symbol of The Woman[3].
Whoever watched yesterday at the love and tenderness by which the
winners
caressed and cheered the Cup, was watching at an act of possession of
the
female object by the horde of young successful novices.
