Does anyone care to hazard a guess as to why the Palestinians cannot
restrain themselves from rioting when they are about to get almost all that
they want through negotiations?

Iakov:

The funny thing is that they are getting much more than what they were
expecting themselves.
You rightly pointed the finger at the Palestinians. I myself have been busy,
in the last months, trying thinking out what is happening to the Israelis.
As Joan Lachkar pointed out some years ago, this is indeed a "folie a deux",
where every side brought to this wedding a heavy personal dowry from his
ancestors' home.
These riots broke out after a long period of calm on the Palestinian side.
And are so aimless and absurd, that the only ones who are smiling are that
tiny part of the Israeli population, the more extremists, who hope this
affair will save them from extinction.
But they are so astonished themselves that have not even dared to utter out
those last messianic hopes. The problem for them is that in the last days
our PM was organizing a tete a tete with the Chief Sefardic Rabbi to have
his blessing for returning parts of Jerusalem itself to the Palestinians,
and was becoming evident he is going to grant it. So the last Jewish
fundamentalists still don't know if this is a gift from God of from Satan.
Anyway, I was expecting riots from the Israeli side, not the Palestinian.
If such a thing had occurred five years ago I can bet we should have had a
civil war, Josephus' Bellum Judaicum style.
Only six years ago Rabin has been assassinated because he only uttered the
word "giving back" some, what seemed then, very tiny part of the Holy body
of our Mother, and now that this PM is eager to give them even my own house,
everybody in Israel loves him, and the Palestinians riot.
I hope the Americans, with their next package of enlarged assistance, will
send us also some planes filled with shrinks.
For what happened to the Israeli side I have some hunch.
After Rabin's assassination, I was expecting some guilt induced knee jerk
reaction. After all, after a patricide of that extension, we WERE supposed
to feel some guilt. But what happened then, immediately after the
assassination, was instead an even more extremist stance and the Likud party
won the election reaffirming their "no one inch" position. So there had been
an immediate denial of the murder and of the guilt. The ones who had
delegated the murder, won the election. It seemed the perfect crime had been
acted out.
I am very sorry Freud was no more alive to see by himself how the primeval
horde killed the Father on this female affair.
By the way, this is very amusing: Freud told us, in "Totem and Taboo" that the
son who took upon himself to act out the patricide had been the youngest of
the horde, and brings the instance of Zeus who was the youngest son, who
killed Cronos his father, and took his place. Now, after the murder of
Rabin, who became the next king, if not Benjamin Netanyahu?
First of all he was the youngest PM we ever had. Israel had always been,
until then, a young country governed by old kings, but the real sting and
honey is in the name. Benjamin is synonymous for the youngest son. It has
become, in the history of mankind, a household name for the little kid of
the family.
I remember being very puzzled, during those election campaign, back in 1995,
by the fact of the matter that in the media he was called much more Benjamin
than by his last name. In America is very usual, but in Israel it is not,
after all we are very old respectful people.
So the children of Israel had performed the same murder and in the same
details.
But, and here comes the joker, in a short time Benjamin Netanyahu (anybody
remembers him? We have forgotten him, too) began to become first derided,
then slandered, and eventually thrown out of job in the most disgraceful way
I have ever seen in the history of the state of Israel. The Likud party
lost, in a span of four years, all the gains the nationalist right had had
in 25 years, since they put an end to the Kingdom of the House of Ben
Gurion.
The Father has been vindicated transforming the first among peers, the son
of the horde who had taken on himself to act out the murder, into the poison
container of the removed guilt.
And now the second stage: the guilt induced renunciation of the female.
The new PM has been elected by a land slide on the platform of getting out
of Lebanon. He declared that by hook or by crook Israel will get out of
Lebanon in an year at most.
The Hizballa guerrilla reacted intensifying immediately their attacks on the
Israeli patrols.
May be they are deaf, or they don't understand Hebrew.
So, after being elected, he repeated loudly: we are getting out anyway, even
if you don't agree.
The Hizballa said to themselves: "May be the Jews are so dumb they don't
understand that we don't want them to retreat, and we will bomb them anyway.
So why to retreat and expose their very civilians to the bombing?"
And now, that the Israeli army has already began the withdrawal, the
Hizballa panicked to the point that they began bombing the Kibbutzim on the
northern frontier.
Came delegation after delegation of Lebanese Christians, pleading not to
retreat; we are speaking of 12 lousy miles anyway, heavily populated by
Christian Lebanese, who will be for sure slaughtered by the Moslems as
Israel retreats.
The Army pleaded the Government not to do such a stupid thing.
But nothing could be done: the Fatum MUST fulfill its ways.
So, the Christians will be slaughtered, the Kibbutzim will be bombed, but
nobody will put himself between the Jews and their guilt.
To paraphrase King Lear : "don't put yourself between a dragon and its fury
(guilt)".
The Syrian affair has been even more ludicrous.
The Golan Heights are populated by 35000 Druses, very friendly to Israel,
the majority of whom has opted for Israel citizenship back twenty years ago,
in the old good days, when the Likud government enacted Israeli law on the
Golan Heights, as there was no point doing otherwise. After all the Druses
themselves asked for that.
Since the 1973 Kippur war, this region has been an island of peace and
pastoral delicacy.
The Syrians have hinted in every possible way they don't want back the
place. They have their very good reasons, because they are afraid that,
doing peace with Israel, will be asked by the international community to
exit Lebanon themselves. They don't want, because Lebanon is the only source
they have for earning hard currency cash.
But even here, nobody is allowed to resist this new Israeli frenzy for
peace.
Here we have a good example of the difference between the substance of
reality and the substance of fantasy.
In reality we already are at peace with the Syrians. Twenty seven years
without a single shot or any act of bellicosity. They proved very well that,
if they want, they can prevent guerilla infiltrations. So, more peace than
that can't be imagined. They just can't afford a formal treaty because of
their good reasons. If we want to be good neighbors we must consider their
needs too.
But our government has been delegated by the people to erase GUILT,
regardless of political, security, strategic or other considerations.
If guilt is involved, we cannot take into account Syrians' needs.
So, in the last year we had the acts of the most ridiculous farce of all.
The Syrians could not say openly they can't sign a treaty with Israel, so
they escalated their demands. First they demanded ALL the Golan Heights, to
the border previous to the Six Days war.
They were sure Israel will refuse. After all it is a very serious thing
having them back so close to Haifa.
When Israel agreed, they demanded the control of the Water. In our dry
region almost all Israeli waters come from there.
The Israeli were astonished at first, but after all, what are drinking
waters, when is involved guilt? We shall drink Coca Cola that our American
friends will for sure send us, or Vodka, now that there is no more hostile
Soviet Union in sight.
So, the Syrians asked for a piece of the Galilee lake, where Jesus had walked
on the water, they wanted too.
Now the game became obvious even to the guilt blinded Delegate of the
People, and finally there was no treaty, as the Syrians wanted in the first
place.
But the funny thing is that yesterday, in an interview on television, our PM
has been scolded by the interviewer for not performing the duty he had been
delegated to do, and felt the need to apologize before the people for this
shortcoming.
So one PM has been already assassinated for wanting to deliver land, another
has been almost assassinated for having acted out the assassination, and may
be another one will be assassinated by some peace extremist, because he has
not delivered enough land, not having been able, in this way, to purify us
completely from our own guilt.
This is the Israeli side.
Now the Arab side of the folie a deux.
For why the Syrians do not want to sign a peace treaty we have found a
practical strategic reason. The Lebanese Hizballa are only acting out Syrian
instructions, trying to prevent Israeli withdrawal. But may well be that,
beyond the real manifest reasons, there is also a latent psychological
reason, that is concealed by the manifest one.
And here come the Palestinians riots.
THEY, for sure have no strategic reason for hindering peace with Israel.
They have been the real victims in all this Arab- Israeli conflict, and may
only lose, rioting and preventing a resolution to the conflict. So, on this
side of the equation, it is clear they just don't want to lose an enemy. If an
enemy has to be, Israel has been not that bad, after all.
So many years, occupied, mistreated, DEPENDENT !
And now Independence!
We know very well what Freud called "the gain" of a symptom?
In so many years they became dependence addicted, and at the eve of freedom,
they just panicked. Their own victimization became a pleasure.
I hope for them this is the ultimate acting out of the symptom, before the
final liberation, because otherwise they are going to have a very bleak
future.
