STRAIGHT FROM INCUBUS PRESSCON
I was lucky enough to have been able to join other members of the press for an exclusive meet n' greet with international rock's IT boys, Incubus, prior to their sold-out A Crow Left of the Murder Tour in Manila.
March 11, 2004, 5 pm Sulu Function Room, Westin Philippine Plaza
Snippets published in PRESS Magazine April 2004
To find out and know…what was your reaction. We would like to know your reaction when you got the call to play for for the philippinres. Coz for the past two yeara, uh, we were supposed to get a lot of rock acts like Oasis, Red Hot, Limp, Googoo Dolls, were all supposed to play but then they bailed out lat the last min, aAnd you guys are here and we’re very, very happy. In fact when we found out last December, we were like, very skeptical. But you guys are here. What was your reaction when you first got the call that you were gonna play in the Philippines?
Brandon Boyd: We were, uh, I think largely, we were very excited coz none of us had ever been here before. And we treat a lot of these opportunities as, like, a cool way to see the world. Have fun adventures and events together, so, uh, we’re just really excited. We have no idea what to expect. We didn’t know if they were selling tickets here… we didnt know really anything so… um, it’s amazing to come here
From your first album to now, how has the Incubus brand of rock evolved?
DJ Chris Kilmore: uh…I came along…then he (Ben Kenney) came along Brandon Boyd: Things got better. We started off probably, ahh…we started off in this band when we were fifteen yrs old. Jose, myself and Mike. And uh, we learned to play… together…in this band. So it..um, ah…if I could be so bold, we got better. Over the years it’s been like a slow, um, arduous going process for us, but we’re very very thankful for it. And um, we were moving very slowly during the few years……You guys agree?
What was it like working with Brandon O’Brien?
Mike: Good times Brandon Boyd: Mike, you wanna… for it? Mike Einziger: Um, ok. Um, Brandon is a, uh, a really great guy, record producer, and uh, he’s made a lot of the albums that we grew up with…a lot of the records that actually inspired us to start a band to begin with, so, um, when it was time for us to choose the producer to make this record with us, he was an obvious choice…when we discovered that he wanted to work with us, it just like, it just seemed like the most natural thing in the world. And he, I think he, uh he shares a lot of his philosophies that we do about making records, things like, doing it really quickly and not overthinking what you’re doing…what was really important. To us, and to him, so it was a really good experience for all of us…and a fast one at that.
A large part of your success is touring a lot…so you’ve been doing it for quite a while. So what pleasures do you look forward to whn you go touring?
Brandon Boyd: Collectively? (I couldn’t decipher this one…sorry!)… Mike Einziger: I think also, we enjoy playing music with each other…still learning the songs that..uh, we just recorded..and uh, we get better…so I think just that, it’s always exciting and the fact that we’re coupled with we’re in a lot of territories….makes that a lot more exciting
What’s in your CD player? What does incubus listen to?
DJ Chris Kilmore: we all have I pods, I have a 40 gig one so I just put it on random and listen to y’know, anything, from, old rock and roll, to hip-hop, to y’know, old dub, y’know to…to…jazz…my case personally is vague. Um… very eclectic, as well as . Um…and ah… Brandon Boyd: Yeah, definitely. That’s a good way of just…listening to our music is just push random and basically…um, yeah. Jose Pasillas: Jeff Buckley, and… Ben Kenney: Bjork Mike Einziger : I’m wearing a Bjork shirt…so…I have a general adoration for a y’know…a lot of jazz music…a lot of uh, rock music, y’know…um anything. Punk, cool, r & b, soul music, um, James brown, Whatus, Redfield, Bjork, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, I think uh, I really think Wheatus has really good music so…I’ll…
I just wanna know: boxers, briefs or nothing at all?
Brandon Boyd: Boxer-briefs? Jose Pasillas: Boxer-briefs DJ Chris Kilmore: Hanes or Calvin Klein Brandon Boyd: I wear grape leaf. Ben Kenney: I rotate…??? Mike Einziger: I just got my jeans
You guys have any stories from Ozzfest…?
Brandon: There’s that band from area 1 Mike: That’s a good story Brandon: That’s a really good story Mike: And he joined our band Brandon: A couple of years later…stolen…to join our band. Um, Ozzfest is always interesting. There are some very interesting haircuts from Ozzfest. Um, you guys heard of a mullet? There’s a lot of them at the Ozzfest
The’re Incubus fans.
Brandon: What’s that?
The mullet wearers are incubus fans.
Mike: Actually those people were yelling at us and throwing things at us Brandon: Although the beer bottle from the audience… Mike Einziger: We’ve seen the angrier audience at the Ozfest more angry than anything else.. Brandon Boyd:…Mike Einziger: Uh…the Area 1 Tour was really fun because it was, uh, a nice ecceclic mix of ? kinds of music …We were the only rock band on that tour which was really refreshing. Um, and we were with that band playing called the Bangled Roots and ah……ah…Outkast was on that tour which was really amazing…They sang “All the Best Talk shows” with me All of us collectively had ever seen and, uh, it was really a good time.
I’d like to go back to the listening thing: In your quiet moment by yourself, do you find time to listen to say, Barry Manilow, and Dionne Warwick cds? Uh, absolutely.
Mike Einziger: Neil Diamond, definitely. …definitely… uh, who else… anything by Rogers and Hammerstein, ?: Celine Dion Brandon Boyd: That goes without saying…Barry Manilow
