PHONE INTERVIEW WITH ISAAC HANSON

<< back l page 2

Wow, that must have been amazing for you.

It is very cool. Uh, he, ah, Billy Joel in particular was one of my, um, is one of my musical idols. Somebody that I look up to, as a songwriter, so it was very nice to get the chance to, to talk to someone who knew Billy Joel as well as Danny did.

Which artists would you consider to be among the band’s musical influences?

Definitely Chuck Berry, the Beatles, ah…Billy Joel, um… ah… gosh, Beach Boys, ah, let’s see… gosh…ahh… things like, some Sam and Dave, we really like some of the old solu music of Sam and Dave, and the Isaac Brothers, ah… and, and more modern stuff that I really like that I think is just, is just really good music, people like Coldplay, Counting Crows, or, ah… there’s a band from the UK called um, Muse, spelled  M-U-S-E, they’re really good. Y’know, you’re always being inspired by, ah, by different music. Ah, New things that you, ah, that you discover, new music that you find to listen to, and then, ah, and then of course, music that inspired you in the first place, like, Billy Joel and Chuck Berry.

What are your favorite songs on your current album?

I have to say I really like them all because y’know, there’s a lot of hard work that went into every single song and I know all the stories behind everything. Um, but one of my favorite songs is…the song “Broken Angel.” I’m really…I’m just very proud of…I’m very proud of how it turned out. Ah, it was the very first song that we produced ourselves, the first song that we decided to ah, take complete production credit for. Ah, and it was a really, um, t’was a really exciting moment when the song’s done, because we looked at each other and said, wow! We did exactly what we wanted to do with the song, and now, and it gave us ah, that next level of confidence to, ah, to take on production of the rest of the record. Ah, which was something that we were not originally, um, planning on doing, but some – but just something that happened naturally. Ah… hold on one second….(Gone for a few seconds)ah, yeah, that-that-that song’s one of my favorite’s a es, um, also, “Who Else With Each Other” I really like because it’s very just, spontaneous, it’s very, a lively, it’s got a lot of energy. Ah… um, and…ah… also um, that song was, it’s a demo. It’s a song that we recorded at our house. And ah, um, at our home studio, I should say, um, and um, that song really came out really, really well, and um, very, very proud of that one also. So, those are two of my favorites.

If you had a 6-CD changer, what would be playing in it and why? I know I-pods are the trend now, but…6 cds that you would most likely…?

6 CDs that I would most like to have in a CD player…ah… well, and I’m gonna have to..um, let’s see…unfortunately, I’m gonna have to ah, cut us off… and you probably have one or two more questions, and, ah, I’m gonna have to… um, time to go. But, uh, 6-CD changer. Um, an artist named David Garza, spelled D-A-V-I-D, Garza, G-A-R-Z-A, the record is called Overdubbed. Um, Billy Joel’s greatest Hits, Vol. 1, Ah…let’s see… There’s a record ah.. that was a compilation album made by Time Life called Rock-and-Roll Era 1958, it has songs like, Johnny Be Good…ah…Summer Time Blues, Splish-Splash, Rockin’ Robin, Good-bye Miss Molly…it’s got all these really great songs from that year. I would definitely have that one. Ah…see..ah… probably…an artist named Teitur, T-E-I-T-U-R, ah, he’s from, he’s from, ah, Denmark. He’s really, really good. Ah, his album is called, Poetry in Aeroplanes, and then, aaaaahh.. probably… let’s see…aaahh…what’s another record that I would really, really like to have…aaaahh…Ah… seeee…hmmm, hmmm, hmmm… Um, Tom Petty, the record’s called Wildflowers.

Okay. Thank you. Last question?

Yeah, last question. Unfortunately.

Okay. No problem.

Laughs.

What’s next for Hanson in the future?

Well, ah, we hope to ah, be coming, ah…coming all around the world. Ah, playing shows…

Will you be stopping over here in the Philippines?

I believe we will be, actually, yeah.

Oh, hey cool! We’re all looking forward to that.

Yeah! Um, and, ah… so… ah..let’s see. Definitely just touring around the world, for this record in the, in the near future. Um, and then, ah…and then, ah…just more albums. We’re—we’re really excited about um, the music that we have for this – for the record after Underneath, also. And I think, um, I think, there’s just a lot more music to come, and ah, we just look forward to playing shows and, and, continuing to make albums for a long time.

Cool. Okay!

Well thank you very much, Valerie!

Thank you very much, Isaac for being so gracious.

Alright, Well, good to talk to you.

Good luck! Good luck with your new album!

And maybe we’ll ah, maybe, we’ll meet in person when we’re in the Philippines.

Yeah! Definitely. Okay. Thank you! Take care!

Thank you. Ba-bye!
