A CRASH COURSE ON EXISTING MUSIC GENRES 1 Take your seats everyone. This is MUSIC GENRES 101 1 Published in PRESS Magazine February 2004
“What music do you listen to?” is a question almost everyone has asked and been asked. Whether it’s used as a conversation starter, to find common ground between people or just for the sake of having something to talk about, music has proven itself time and again to be a universal element of life, it being a much talked-about subject.
So, what music do you listen to?
Then you start running down the list of music genres that maybe you pick off the top your head, the first thing that comes to mind (when you’re nervous), or the one that sounds cool (according to you or gauging from the point of view of whom you’re talking to) if you want to impress someone.
Rock. Pop. R&B. Classical. Neo classical. The list goes on and on.
Then comes the question, “So, what bands/groups/singers appeal to you in this genre?” or something like that. So you start naming them, depending on what you know and how extensive your knowledge is on this matter.
Sometimes, however, people tend to misplace bands they deem as belonging to one genre to another genre. It’s alright if the person you’re talking to isn’t familiar with the music preference you’ve named. But what if he is?
More often than not, numerous people have found themselves interchanging band names and artists under the wrong genre. Sure, a little correction doesn’t hurt. But it can be quite embarrassing, especially if you pass yourself off as a true-blue (insert music genre name) and so-called connoisseur of whatever genre you’ve named.
In an attempt to enlighten and educate all you music lovers out there, here is a crash-course on the most popular music genres to date. True, it is not easy to describe all the different music genres nowadays, because aside from the fact that there are a lot of variations, differences and confusions about this issue, music is also alive, and it branches out into so many styles that no single description fits a genre with total accuracy. A few generalizations, however, can be made, bearing in mind that for all of them, exceptions can be cited.
