THE FANNYPACK Q&A
How would you describe your group and
your music? What would you like the people to know about you?
We just try to make fun music that makes people feel good. We don't really
classify it in any specific genre.
What/who are your influences?
Immelda Marcos, The Carpenters, Elephant Man, Our families, The Lord Jesus
Christ
What do you sing about?
Mainly partying and getting ready to party and the experiences one would
experience while parting.
Under what genre would classify
your music?
We wouldn't classify it. How would you classify it?
How did the group get together?
Fannypack was founded in the summer of 2002 when long time New York City DJs and
all around musical tour de forces “Big Black” Matt Goias and Fancy met an
aspiring DJ named Cat Hartwell. Matt and Fancy had been making music and decided
to record Hartwel’’s voice on a few of their beats. The tracks came out great
and everyone kept going about their daily business. One day, a few weeks later,
while shopping for records in Brooklyn’s Fulton Street Mall, Matt and Fancy
heard an amazing girl screaming from across the street and the boys immediately
knew that they must record this person’s voice. Upon finding the source of the
racket, they were delighted to see that the vocal cords were attached to the
beautiful head of a certain Miss Jessibel Suthiwong, 17 years old at the time.
Goias explains, “I approached Jessibel, introduced myself as the producer of
Snoop Dogg’s “Doggfather” album, asked her if she would like to try making some
songs, and asked her old old she was. When she told me seventeen, I told her to
have her mom call me and she did. We arranged a meeting and we all got along
swimmingly. We took Jess into the studio that very day and a few hours later, we
had recorded “Hey Mami.”
“At that point, we were just messing around and weren’t really even thinking in
terms of starting a group.” Recalls Fancy. “It wasn’t til a few weeks later that
Jessibel met Cat and we were like, “You know what , we have something here, we
should make a group. We decided that we needed a rapper and Jessibel brought us
Belinda. They were classmates at school in Brooklyn. Jess introduced us to
Belinda and we loved her and she was great.”
Belinda joined the band and then the five random and diverse New Yorkers became
Fannypack.
As teenagers, how has your life
changed since the group came together?
Our teachers give us all passing grades in school automatically because we are
famous. Also the other big change is the millions of dollars we now have.
Sometimes we don't even know where to begin spending our money so we throw
parties for everyone in our community. Matt and Fancy are amazing bakers and
they bake up cupcakes and lemon merengue for all of Brooklyn.
You have two DJs: how does that
work?
Matt and Fancy write all of the songs and make all of the music. It's really
their group and we are very grateful that they let us be in it. We are more like
Frank Sinatra, we consider ourselves song stylists.
Who writes the songs? Where does
the songwriter draw the inspiration from?
Matt and Fancy. We don't ike to work so we make them write all the songs.
That’s stupid boy stuff anyway and we are much too busy to be writing songs and
crap like that. Matt and Fancy are inspired by us. We can be very inspiring.
How did you come up with the name
"Fannypack?"
Its a joke we thought it would be funny to make people say such a dumb word.
Do any of you have actual musical
backgrounds?
Matt and Fancy have musical backgrounds. We don't they found us at the mall
basically.
Who/what are your top 5 favourite
artists/CDs right now? Why?
Beyonce
Sean Paul
Missy
Cam Ron
Immelda Marcos
Have you had any weird/bizarre
experiences since getting into music?
Yes.
How has your lifestyles changed
since becoming musicians?
Not at all. The five of us are still the same exact people. We like to keep it
real yo.
What are the most-kick ass perks
that come with being Fannypack? How good is it to be Fannypack?
The travel. It is very exciting to see a crowd of people in Finland singing
along to songs we made in Fancy’s bedroom. We try to make sure we always have
fun and that our fans are having a good time and that Immelda Marcos is having a
good time.
