CONTRAST
As Charles Henry astutely pointed out, contrast was a very important mental operation in the subjective state of man. In his chapter on sensation and continuity any sensation can be defined as being responsive mostly to a stoppage in the continuous flow of sensationsaffecting our nerve endings. In the popular asense contrast exists where there is a decided lack of similarity. This dissimilarity between the 2 conditions is
striking because it commands our attention as ot compares one state to another. (Such as one representation to another one). For instance, we mentally substitute one condition for another by comparison and evaluate them according to our experiences, phobias, likes, etc. In our mental field contrast and rhythm become distinguishable by their "sensing or stoppage points" i.e. where continuity is interrupted. (musical rest notes are a good example)

Sensations, Ideas, Representations
The biological functions of the living being (man) we observe that we can interrelate the objective frequencies of the external excitant events (light, heat, sound, etc) to the corresponding resonant or "tuned frequencies of receptor circuits" in our neurological system. And
if we find that the proportionality between the excitant stimuli and the internal reaction is fixed, more or less them we observe adaption favoring instinctive behavior of the lower animals. The structure of the higher primates and the more complex brain of man striking modalities that override such instinctive behaviour patterns. This gave rise to the evolution of free will or choice in man..... and released him from the confines of his instinctual "Garden of Eden", forever........
