Frances, I don't know why you would ever start going out with someone who smells so bad in the first place! If you don't feel comfortable talking to him about the horrid horrid smell, there is another way. You can write him an anonymous letter stating that he stinks like garbage water on a hot day, and that he should do something about it before it kills someone. This should give him the message.
