The River Of Night 3

Eridanus

March 1 -12, April 10 - 18 & May 9 - 15

The River Eridanus was known as the River of Night in ancient Babylon. It is one of the longest constellations in the sky, rising at Orion's feet and winding down almost to the South Pole. Achernar, found at the southern end of the River (which is not shown on this image), is the brightest star in the entire constellation. It is best seen from the southern hemisphere but it can be glimpsed, flashing low on the southern horizon in October, from the latitude of southern florida. For the ancients Acamar marked the end of the River and its most important star, as they were unable to see Achernar lying near the South Pole. Both Acamar and Zanrak can best be seen low on the southern horizon, to the west of Orion's feet, from the latitude of New York.
