The Cup
Crater
September 11 - 21
The constellation of Crater, the Cup, or Goblet, which belonged to Dionysus, the young Greek god of wine and ecstacy, stands on the back of Hydra, the Sea Serpent, south west of Virgo. Alkes is the main star in the Cup, marking the base of the constellation, which is a small, faint trapezoidal group of stars with cup-like arms. It lies to the west of Corvus, the Raven, which is also perched on the Sea Serpents back, and it can be seen low on the southern horizon in the Spring. It is more easily visible from the southern hemisphere.
