Orion

June 1 - 7 & June 17 - 27

Orion. the Great Huntsman, is the brightest constellation in the heavens and can be easily recognized. he rises in the south east in October and sets in the south west in March, and can be seen also in the southern hemisphere, but inverted. On clear winter evenings, as he moves slowly throught the sky, wearing his glittering belt through which the celestial equator passes, and with the Dog Stars at his heels, it is not hard to see why he was believed to be the most handsome man the world has ever known. Nor, as the new moon rises, why he was the only love of Artemis, the virgin goddess of hunting and the crescent moon. Rigel, the Mariners' Star, which marks Orion's left leg, is a blue -white supergiant, 57,000 times brighter than our sun.Betelgeuse, which marks Orion's right shoulder is a reddish-topaz supergiant so large that it could contain the whole orbit of the earth around the sun.
