Andromeda
April 2 - 9 & April 19 - May 8
Andromeda, the princess chained in space, waiting for her hero,Perseus, to rescue her from the Sea Monster, is an Autumn and Winter constellation, lying due south of her mother Cassiopeia, in the northern hemisphere. To find her, first locate the bright W-shaped constellation of Cassiopeia near the pole, which is one of the easiest to recognize. One of Andromeda's stars also forms one corner of the 'Great Square' of Pegasus, the winged horse. Beneth them, nearer the horizon to the south, in the area of the skies known as the Sea in ancient Babylon, swim Pisces, the fishes of the zodiac and Cetus, the Sea Monster, ready to devour her. In the centre of the constellation lies the famous Andromeda Galaxy. More than 2 million light years away, it is the most distant object in the universe which we can see with the naked eye, glimmering through the veil of our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
