| Candle Making & Magick |
| In my travels and research in my spiritual life, I have learned many things, read many books, studied many religions. One of them I am currently reading about is Wicca. I do not profess to know all about the religion, or call myself a Wiccan. I am simply interested in the study and some of the practices. One of the things I've found most interesting is candle magick. Most of us have practiced candle magick. Most of us use a form of candle magick every year at our birthdays when we make our wish and blow out the candles on a birthday cake! The process of lighting candles in the Catholic religion is a form of candle magick. I will burn a candle in thought, prayer or helpfulness to a person or myself. I will hold a candle in my hands, focus on the intent of it's burning, weather it be healing, self improvement, thoughtful prayer, or something else that's for a positive outcome and ask The Divine to guide me in this prayer or wish, or helpful thought. I will sometimes annoint my candles with oil to further the process of making it special and connecting my energy with the wax of the candle. In lighting the candle, my prayer, wish or intent is carried up to The Divine, or The Heavens on the flame and the smoke of the flame. I never extinguish a candle, but rather allow it to burn all the way down and let it burn itself out. To blow it out or extinguish it, is to blow away or extinguish your intent. So for this reason I use small candles. Magickal Colors In magick, (the "k" is added to the word to distinguish it from stage magic) color is usually important to secure your intent. The more effort you put in to your ceremonial candle burning, the more energy you put forth, ultimately making the outcome you want more guaranteed. Here is a simple guide to what colors to use for what intents. Black Absorbs negative energy Blue Aids in healing, meditation, brings tranquility and wisdom Green healing, prosperity, money issues Orange Strength, sucess & joy Pink Emotional love & harmony Purple Spirituality & intuition Red Love, passion, courage, friendship & career Yellow Clairvoyance, communication White Purity, protection & clarity. White can be substituted for any other color You don't have to be an initiated Wiccan to preform these simple steps in candle magick. Just simply want your desired intent enough to make it happen with positive affirmations. The magick isn't in the candle or the props, it's in YOU! I would like to offer a special thanks for my wiccan friend, you know who you are. She has guided me in so many areas, helping me understand in my early days if Wicca was for me. She's always been open with advice when asked, but has not ever tried to "convert" me. It is not the Wiccan way to convert others. But instead has simply been generous with information, and encouraged me to find my own truth. She is also very good at candle making, and offered me much information when I first took up the candle making craft. Blessed Be, my friend! Candle Making When I make candles, I will recycle the wax of the candles I've already used and pour new ones. I simply break up the wax with a screw driver and hammer and remove any debrit or the used wick and put it in a double boiler made from a melting pot and an old pot that is no longer used for cooking If your constructing a candle from scratch, it is recommended that you use 3 parts paraffin to 1 part bees wax. After the wax is melted, I will use anything I can find for a mold. Usually things made of a paper or cardboard construction, like a milk carton, cocoa can, frozen juice container, "dixie" style cups, etc. Poking a hole in the bottom of the container to run a wick through, and sealing the hole with tape or mold sealer putty. Then I secure the wick on with a pencil or stick restng on the top of the container so I don't loose the wick when I pour the hot wax in. I've also just recently discoved PVC as a great mold. If you go to your local hardware superstore, you can usually get this plastic white pipe in any girth practically, and they can cut it to length right there. You can also buy the little tester caps to snap into the ends to seal the mold. Just punch a wick hole through the bottom of the cap and there you have it! If you wish to add scent or color chips, add those right before you pour the wax. After I pour the wax in the container, I let it cool for a few hours. The candles will usually form a well in the top where the wax shrinks as it cools, so save some wax for filling the well. After the wax has cooled completely, (4-8 hours depending on size) peel away the container, or shake the candle loose and voila! You have a ready made candle. For candle magick purposes, I will smudge the candles to clear away any excess energy from previous burnings before I use them. Also, let the candles continue to harden for about 24 hours before you burn them for the first time. |
