What is an altar?
An Altar is simply a sacred space in a part of your home that makes you feel spiritual and pays homage to the Divine Power, Great Spirit, God, Goddess, buddah, or whatever your name is for your power source.  An altar can be big or small, it can be on top of a table, or inside a nook in a private place.  It doesn't have to be elaborate, it can be very simple as long as it has things on it that make you feel closer to The Divine.

I have several altars in my home, as well as one in my office.  The Atlars at home located in several areas of my home.  The altars at home are small in size, and just contain a few items, a Buddah, some crystals, and an incense burner.  My altar at the office is less structured, a plant, a couple of crystals, and a candle that doesn't get lit, for fire hazard reasons.  I also have a Buddah and several crystals on top of my computer monitor.  This is simply to draw my eye up and remind me to balance my energy.  ]

On some of my smaller altars, I have rocks, my oil difusser, more buddhas, candles, pictures of my husband and I and another incense burner.  I will often sit next to these altars when I'm meditating and light the candles on it to feel centered.

To make your own alter, simply pick a spot in your home and make it your own.  Make this spot sacred to you.  Put things here that make you feel spiritual.  Pictures of The Divine, Angels, Jesus, God, Buddha, whatever you find sacred.  Maybe add some rocks to reminde you of the beauty that The Divine created.  Candles are always good for an altar because many cultures believe that prayers are carried up to the universe with the smoke of a candle, and that the spirit world are attracted to the flame.  A bell is also a nice addition to an altar, because the sweet sound of a bell can open up energy and it can signify the beginning and end of a sacred event like prayer time or meditation time.  Crystals are also good for an altar, because they can enhance the energy of that space.  Make sure to cleanse and charge them before placing them on your altar.

Altars are a beautiful and a part of almost every religion.  They can be inside your home, or outside.  Just make it special to you, and someplace that makes you feel healthy, happy, spiritual and peaceful.  Happy altar making.
