Abstract

A self-rating and interviewer rating depression inventory consisting of 21 categories with 4 or 5 point scales given in the appendix was validated against combined clinical ratings of depth of depression by 4 psychiatrists. The ratings of depth of depression were made independent of diagnostic categories. Agreements between psychiatrists on diagnosis were low, but were high on depth of depression. High agreement was found between psychiatrists' ratings and the inventory. Sensitivity of the inventory to changes in the intensity of depression over time was taken as further validation.
