| posted October 25, 2003 12:30 AM EST The PSU Preview Staff has been having recurring nightmares lately. No, it's not the recent release of Tarantinos blood-fest Kill Bill Vol. 1 or the latest version of the horror classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre that has the Staff losing sleep. It's not even the approach of Halloween and all the ghastly ghouls that will be unleashed into the friendly suburban streets. Rather, it is the resurfacing of the most frightening two-some since Freddie and Jason teamed up. That's right Liza Minnelli and David Gest are back in the news. Evidently David is accusing Liza of drunken rages and domestic violence. He is asking for $10 million due to the neurological damage and headaches that he has suffered from as a result of the attacks. The suit alleges that alcohol, specifically Vodka, gave Minnelli "remarkable force and strength." Here's the thing, the sight of them is scary enough. It's almost as bad as clowns. Their wedding images left the Staff sleepless for 2 months. Their wedding party alone is enough to give you a bad case of the heebie-jeebies Michael Jackson carrying the brides train and Liz Taylor as the Maid of Honor. Yikes! But imagine one of them angry and drunk and punchy with the strength of a superhero. That's enough to send the Staff cowering under the covers. Speaking of rage, how about Frank Beamer? Wednesday night during the Hokies upsetting 7-28 loss to West Virginia, Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer pulled a Liza and got a little slap-happy with one of his players. Beamer slapped Virginia Tech WR Ernest Wilford on the sidelines during the game, which ESPNs cameras caught and replayed continuously on SportsCenter. Virginia Tech entered the game Wednesday night ranked third in the country. Many analysts were already discussing next weeks battle of the un-beatens when Virginia Tech faces No. 2 Miami. It was a classic looking-ahead upset. As the Staff has repeatedly preached this year, there is no better motive for an upset than looking ahead particularly during this point in the season. Weve crossed the mid-season mark where the rankings are now more significant. We are beginning to see how things might play out. In fact, many fans are already making plans to follow their teams to Conference Championship games and Bowl games that their teams are weeks away from even receiving an invitation to attend. All this talk, all the hype, it makes the team forget that the season is far from over. You really have to take it one week at a time. This weeks pick for upset of the week is a prime example. Oregon State has a legitimate shot at beating Washington State based solely on the Cougars susceptibility to looking ahead. After all, Washington State is entering the game ranked number 6. They have won 5 in a row following their overtime loss to Notre Dame in week 2. Things are looking pretty good for the Cougars. Its becoming more and more a reality that the National Championship game will have at least one team with at least one loss this year. Plus, after this weeks loss, Virginia Tech has been knocked off above them. All Washington State has to do is prove themselves legit next weekend when they face PAC-10 rival Southern Cal who is currently ranked number 4. Yeah, thats right. Washington State is facing Southern Cal next weekend. but the Beavers will be helped by Washington States anticipation for next weekend's game. The Staff trusts that Wednesday nights rough-housing was not a sign of things to come. Hopefully the Cougars will handle this predicted upset with a bit more dignity; otherwise we might have to rename this article Slap Down of the Week. Beamer has apologized for the unfortunate incident, and Wilford has accepted his apology. The university will not take action. The Staff can only hope that the Liza/David debacle will end in such a civilized manner. At least it would get their mugs off the front page and give the Staff a good nights rest! | Who cares about these measly Oregon State Beavers? Its not like they have the nations third-leading rusher. What? They do? RB Steven Jackson (pictured, left) is averaging 132.7 yards per game even after being held to only 49 yards on 22 carries in last weeks loss to the Washington Huskies. Jackson has 926 yards rushing for the season and 9 touchdowns. He will have his work cut out for him as he faces the PAC-10's leading rush defense, |
