Week Three
This week, the PSU Preview Staff cooks up something different as we look at the best recipe for a college football upset   a pinch of Looking Ahead combined with a dash of Retribution.

The Makings of an Upset

First Ingredient Looking Ahead
:
Colorado is coming off a pair of
impressive wins.  First, beating intrastate
rival
Colorado State, 42-35, on a last-
second touchdown (an upset at the time
since the pre-season polls had CSU
ranked above CU).  Then, a come from
behind win over visiting
UCLA, 16-14.
Back-to-back fourth quarter wins are
exciting, but tiring.

This Staff is getting exhausted just writing about it.

The Buffs start the year at a remarkable 2-0 for the first time in five years.  But things don't get any easier, not until their
Big XII Conference opener against Baylor anyway. After this week's home game against Washington State, the Buffs will be traveling down South to take on Florida State, making this week a classic looking ahead week.

The Buffs got some bad luck after their win over UCLA.  DE and Team Captain
Marques Harris broke his leg late in the game and is out for the season.  Not good for a Defense that is allowing an average of 436.5 yards per game this season.

Second Ingredient Retribution
:
The Cougars opened the year with a 25-0 win over rival
Idaho (thats right, rival).  WSU is heading to Boulder fresh off a disappointing 29-26 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in overtime, a fact Colorado Head Coach Gary Barnett thinks that will make the team even more dangerous.

"You don't see teams like that lose two in a row," he said.
The Cougars jumped ahead of the Irish 19-0.  However, they made several costly mistakes that allowed the Irish to mount a comeback.

The Cougars are primed for some good old-fashioned reckoning, college football style.

WSU Offense is averaging 422 yards and nearly 20 first downs per game this season.  Their Defense isnt half bad either - WSU linebacker
Will Derting was recently named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Derting recorded three sacks, 12 tackles and one forced fumble.

"That's a season for some people," Cougars Head Coach Bill Doba said. "On the first play he knocked the tackle down, ran past him and sacked [Notre Dame quarterback Carlyle] Holiday. He'll be all over the field again this weekend."

Cougars Punter
Kyle Basler received praise from Doba as well. Basler had three punts inside the Notre Dame 10-yard-line and two inside the 5.

Directions for Upset
:
Mix the first two ingredients and let simmer for 3 hours.
