| Virginia Cavaliers at South Carolina Gamecocks Saturday, September 6, 2003 Willliams-Brice Stadium - Columbia, SC 12:30 PM EST - JP Sports Sometimes its hard to call an upset an upset when both the teams involved match up rather evenly. That is certainly the case here. South Carolina is only a three-point underdog, so the game could go either way. Factor in that Virginia is traveling to South Carolina to play and youd think all signs point to the Gamecocks as the favorite. But thats not the case. Lets look back at week one. Both teams played against opponents that they clearly outmatched. Both teams won their respective games. But at this point in the season, the Cavaliers came out ready to play football and the Gamecocks struggled. Virginia shut out the Duke Blue Devils in impressive fashion by 27 points, while South Carolina stumbled to a win over UL Lafeyette, 14-7. Based on the performances of their first games, the Cavaliers should make minced meat of the Gamecocks rather quickly. But, take into the account that Virginia Senior QB Matt Schaub (#7) will be sitting on the bench with his arm in a sling, and that quickly changes the whole dynamic. Look for the Cavaliers to be lead by one of two freshman quarterbacks. That could be trouble on the road in SEC country. If history plays any part in this, the advantage goes to South Carolina. Virginia holds only an 11-25-4 record on the home fields of SEC schools (including a paltry 4-10 mark at South Carolina). Take into account that the Gamecocks will be riding the momentum of Lou Holtz surpassing former Ohio State Head Coaching legend Woody Hayes in all-time wins at 239, and all signs point to a South Carolina win. Virginia should win but South Carolina will win. Virginia 10 - South Carolina 24 |
