| UCF Golden Knights over the Virginia Tech Hokies. Sunday, August 31, 2003 Hokie Stadium - Blacksburg, VA 3:00 PM EST - ESPN Clearly, many people will disagree with this selection, but this is my pick for week 1. Grab a pen or pencil and mark it down, the Golden Knights will beat the Hokies. Ok, you can stop laughing now. Ill admit, this is one of those times where my heart, not my head, played a big part in my decision-making. I dont necessarily like the Hokies and I have a soft-spot for the Knights after their determined effort against Penn State in last years opening game. But, the game does have some factual basis as the makings for a potential upset. For example, against the Nittany Lions, the Knights were indeed outmatched and still managed to put up a couple of late touchdowns to make the game at least look interesting. In fact, in four of their five losses in 2002, UCF only lost by an average of 5.5 points. Thats what we call playing with heart, people. Granted, heart will only take you so far, but that kind of resiliency is what is needed when the Knights line up against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Sunday. The key will be if the Knights can keep the Hokies vaunted special teams in check. If and when the Knights prove me right, this will be the biggest upset in UCF school history since beating the Alabama Crimson Tide 40-38 in 2000. What a way to kickoff the programs 25th Golden Anniversary! While the Knights are seeking a big win to get their program on the map, the Hokies are primed for disappointment. History doesnt lie. After opening up the 2002 season on an 8-0 run, Virginia Tech managed to lose four of their last five regular season games before barely squeaking past Air Force 20-13 in the Humanitarian Bowl. In addition, since winning the Big East Conference in 1999, the Hokies have finished in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place in the conference in each subsequent year. Thats a downward spiral that hardly builds confidence and momentum from one year to the next. They wont win big, but the Golden Knights will get the last laugh in this one. |
