| The Penn State Blue Devils opened the season in style with an offensive onslaught that overwhelmed PSU New Kensington. Andy Fry harrassed New Ken pitchers all day with his hot bat. Fry opened his college career by going 7 for 9 on the day. Fry also drove in eight runs and scored four. Fry was not the only Blue Devil achiever at the plate, however, as the squad pounded out 31 hits. PSU BEAVER 12 PSU NEW KENSINGTON 1 The Blue Devils scored two runs in their first at bat to begin an arsenal that ended in a 12-1 victory. Mike Meerdo and Andy Fry reached on bunt singles and were driven in by Brad Dean's two strike base hit. In the second, walks by Dan Hileman and Ron Glass were converted into runs by Brad Mustio (on by error) and Andy Fry (single). On the mound, Mike Berwick (1-0), handled the New Ken offense, limiting them to only four hits in the game. He appeared stronger in the late innings, retiring the side in the sixth inning. The Blue Devils blew open a 6-0 lead in the sixth inning by bringing 11 batters to the plate and scoring six more runs to secure the mercy rule victory. | PSU BEAVER 17 PSU NEW KENSINGTON 3 It was a game of huge offensive numbers for a number of Blue Devil players. Brad Mustio score five runs and reached base in seven consecutive at bats. Andy Fry was 3-4 with a couple of RBI. Mike Berwick was 4-4 with a sacrifice fly. Mike Meerdo had four hits in five at bats. In all, the Blue Devils pounded 19 hits. The biggest inning for the Blue Devils was the fourth inning when they scored seven runs on five hits. Dan Hileman's leadoff triple started the inning, but Meerdo, Berwick, and Mike Spisak contributed hits in the frame. Dustin Swartfager (1-0) was very effective on the mound, scattering six hits in his debut. BOX SCORE |
