Use AutoFilters to display specific information in any sheet view
In any sheet view, click <Filtered For> on the Project menu, then click <AutoFilter>. Click the arrow in the column containing the information you want to display, then click the criteria by which you want to filter information. The arrow and column title for that column will turn blue. To filter based on a third value, repeat the above process in the column containing that value.

Toggle assignment unit values between percentages and decimals
To switch between displaying resource assignment value as a percentage or as a decimal value, click Options from the Tools menu, then on the Schedule tab, click the Show assignment units as a: drop-down control and make your choice.

Explore your Intranet or the Internet directly from Project 98
Microsoft Project 98 provides tools that activate your web browser so that you can navigate an Intranet or the World Wide Web from within your projects. To display the Web Toolbar, choose Toolbars from the View menu, then click Web from the submenu.

Indicator icons display additional task, resource, and assignment information
Microsoft Project 98 adds a new field to the right of the ID field in most of its views. The indicator field displays any number of icons which represent one of the different types of messages that may be associated with a task, resource, or assignment. When you point to one of these icons with the cursor, the information associated with it pops up. Indicator icons represent a range of information including: personal notes, task constraints, over-allocation warnings, resource contouring, hyperlink information, and more.

Drag to join or move the different parts of your split tasks
You can move any portion of a split task independently by dragging. If you want to move the entire bar while maintaining the relative split distance, just hold down the Shift-key while dragging either of the split portions. If you want to join two parts of a split task, just drag one split section into the other.

Use your Intranet to handle workgroup communication
In Microsoft Project 98 you can use your Intranet for workgroup communication, provided you have:
Click Options from the Tools menu, then select the Workgroup tab and choose either <Web> or <E-mail and Web> from the Default workgroup messaging for resources drop-down control. Fill out the Web Server URL and Web Server root text boxes with the appropriate pathnames, then click OK. You can also set message transport modes on a resource-by-resource basis in the Resource Information dialog box.

Drag-and-drop to create dependencies between tasks in different projects
Open the projects containing the tasks you want to link. Then, on the Window menu, click <New Window>. In the New Window dialog, hold down the CTRL-key as you click the projects you want to consolidate, then click OK. On the View Bar, click Gantt Chart. Now drag to create true dependencies between the tasks regardless of which project they are from. Position the pointer over the Gantt bar for the predecessor task and drag to the successor task in the other project.
This creates a finish-to-start task dependency that can be edited exactly as if it were a dependency between tasks in a single project.

Microsoft Project 98 automatically transfers Microsoft Project 95 customizations
When you install Microsoft Project 98 over a previous version of Microsoft Project, Microsoft Project 98 renames your existing Global file so you don't lose any customized settings it might contain. The new file name depends on your previous version of Project, but will have the version number appended to the file name. For example, a Project 95 global would be renamed to GLOBAL40.MPT.

Copy specific customized elements from earlier installations to Project 98
Click Open in the Project 98 File menu, and select your renamed Global file. This opens the Organizer in Update mode which allows you to select elements from your Project 95 global file and move them to your Project 98 global file.

Publish formatted project data directly to your Intranet
Although optional, you can make sure that the data you publish on your intranet is formatted correctly every time by basing your export on an HTML template created with your favorite HTML editor. Save your project to an HTML document by clicking Save As HTML on the File menu. If you are using an HTML template, click the New map button to bring up the Define Import/Export Map dialog box. Then in the HTML options section on the Options tab, and make sure you select the Base export on HTML template checkbox and that the correct template is listed in the associated field. Click OK, make sure the correct map is selected, and click Save. (See MS Project 98 online help for a complete discussion of import/export maps.).If you aren't using a template, skip all of the steps related to Import/Export maps mentioned above and just click <Save>.

For team collaboration, use Microsoft TeamManager with Microsoft Project
Instead of adding and assigning tasks to and managing updates from individual members of work teams, you can assign one task to the team's lead and let that person manage the task details, work assignments, and status reports. The team manager can update you on the group's status using a special form of the TeamStatus report. The result is a more streamlined project plan and more time for the project manager to attend to high-level matters. (Make sure you use Team Manager 97 Service Release 1; the original release isn't compatible with some Project 98 scheduling features.)
