Leong Kin Wei came out with flying colours during the Global Taekwon-do Federation Championship held in Bologna, Italy from 4 - 7 May, 2000 winning a gold and a silver. A total of 26 countries participated.

Kin Wei, representing Malaysia won the silver medal for the men's free-sparring middle weight. He beat England but lost to Norway during the finals. Kin Wei also won the gold medal for the Special Breaking Technique. Kin Wei was the only contestant to break a 2 inch thick board with a flying turning kick placed 9 feet above the ground.

I am very happy with Kin Wei's performance. Kin Wei has always shown discipline and dedication. Coupled to that he has singleness of purpose and diligently perfected each technique when told to do so. Mentally, he has been trained to be a winner. He has been with me for 5 years and has earned his Second Degree Blackbelt. He has sacrificed a lot of his time and has never been distracted by unhealthy activities that are rampant nowadays. His aim was to be a world champion. Although he did not win the gold, Kin Wei was satisfied with his performance because the Norwegian was a head taller than him.
