Geeta Enterprises’ Chor Machaaye Shor is about Sham (Bobby Deol), a young guy dreaming of becoming rich, steals a diamond worth Rs. 30-crore with the help of three friends. He is chased by the police, and he hides it in a dilapidated building before being arrested. He is sent to prison for two years and when he comes out of jail, he is shocked to find a police headquarters building standing in place where he hid the diamond. Posing as a police inspector Ram, so he enters the headquarters with the intention of tracking down the diamond.
Shilpa Shetty plays Kajal, the daughter of the police inspector played by Paresh Rawal. Kajal falls in love with the car driver (Bobby Deol) of her father and is stupid enough to believe anything he tells her. While Bipasha plays a police inspector (Inspector Ranjita), who falls in love with Bobby. Everytime Bobby is searching for the diamond, she catches him in strange positions and to make her foget it, Bobby entertains her.
Writers Yunus Sejawal and Shah Nawaz Ahmed have come up with some very entertaining comedy scenes. The main story (of the diamond) has been written rather shabbily and also treated quite badly. The drama is laced with incidents and gags which often entertain the audience brilliantly. Action scenes in good measure keep the masses happy. Dialogues (Anwar Khan) are execellent.
Bobby Deol surprise you and proves that he is at ease in a comic role. His performances are spontaneous. He is also good in action scenes and stunts. Shilpa Shetty has a tiny role and does well. She blows you away in dance, especially in ‘ Main Ishqan Ishqan Ho Gaye’ and 'Chadh Gayi Chadh Gayi' number. She exposes her terrific figure uninhibitedly. Bipasha Basu has an even smaller role and does justice to it. (so appreantly it was just a romour sayin Shilpa has less role than Bipasha). Shekhar Suman plays to the gallery and evokes laughter almost every time he comes on the screen. He shifts through the variety of characters he portrays, with admirable ease.
Om Puri is also splendid, Paresh Rawal is perfect for his comedy (as usual). Ashish Vidyarthi and Rajat Bedi lend good support. Rajpal Yadav does well but is a bit too loud. Razak Khan excels. Ghanshyam, Guddi Maruti, Shashi Kiran and the others provide superb support.
David Dhawan seems to have bounced back in form with this film. His narration is smooth and his comedy punches evince audience laughter and participation. But his sidetracking of the main story and its casual treatment will definitely tell on the film’s box-office performance. In most of his other successful films, the lighter part of the drama has always been restricted to a few individuals but in this one, the comedy encompasses not just the police but the state too, giving the impression that everyone is brainless.
Anu Malik’s music is okey. ‘Main Ishqan Ishqan Ho Gaye’ is the best song, followed by ‘Chadh Gayi Chadh Gayi’ and ‘Aankhen Hai Teri Badi Badi’. In the second half, songs are placed too close to one another and they also have no situations. Song picturisations (Ganesh Acharya) are eye-filling. Camerawork (Harmect Singh) is very good. Action and stunts (Abbas Ali Moghul) are very well composed. Production values are rich.
On the whole, Chor Machaaye Shor is a complete entertaining film with hilarious comedies. But a dull start almost everywhere will come in the way of its smooth journey. Considering its dull start on the one hand and its intrinsic merits on the other, the film will definitely pick up by word of mouth. Business in Bombay and Maharashtra will be much above the average mark. In some other circuits, the film may sail safe but the producers’ deficit will remain.
