Hong Kong - September 2006 |
|
|

Yep, more Hong Kong photos, but the city is constantly changing. I had a chance to visit (but not ride) the new NingPo cable car on Lantau. It was shut, due to high winds, but can carry up to 15,000 people to the Po Lin Monestary on the peak of Lantau Island. Since I've seen the Big Buddha numerous times, I wasn't too disappointed. I also visited Ocean Park which I recommend over AsiaDisney for too many reasons to list here. I visited on a Monday and the entire place was empty. Needless to say, I went on all of the rides. |

I'm forcing a smile. We visited the tram on its first week of operations. After waiting for two hours, they shut it down due to high winds. Bummer. |

This little guy was being taken to AsiaDisney by his Filipino domestic helper. |

This is but a small section of the massive Ocean Park. This is the area where the thrill rides are located. It is amazing when you realize that the entire park is built on cliffs that rise hundreds of feet from the sea. There are also multiple aquariums, a panda habitat, an aviary, a race track, and... |

This photo was taken just outside the entrance to Ocean Park. You can see a large container ship and a small fishing boat at the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour. |

...a functioning cable car! While I can't compare the views with NingPo, I will hazard to guess that they're much more interesting. The cabs are quite small and I wouldn't recommend them if you're claustrophobic or scared of heights. |

Ocean Park's biggest stars are the two pandas, Jia-Jia and An-An. They have a special enclosure and slept most of the time. I guess the muzak causes drowsiness. |

This was a labor protest that took place on National Day (October 1st). Hong Kong's dog-eat-dog capitalism can be downright abusive. Some McDonald's workers only make 17HKD/hour (that's about 2USD). |
