Langkawi Island - January 2004 (Part I)
Langkawi is part of a large archipelago of islands northwest of Kuala Lumpur.  It has seen rapid development over the past few years and its airport can now accomodate international flights.
The beach at Pantai Kok.  The "summer palace" set from the movie "Anna and the King" can be seen in the background.  This beach area is being rapidly developed
This is the waterfall directly below the Seven Wells, which deep pools that can only be accessed after a long, sweaty hike uphill through the rainforest.
My favorite beach on Langkawi, Pantai Pasir Tengkorak.  It's an isolated and small patch that was abandoned most of the time.
Fisherman collecting the first catch of the day at Pantai Cenang.  Much of the harvest was of small, unimpressive marine life, much of which was simply thrown back into the sea, dead.
The marine refuge at Pulau Payar.  Most of the reef's coral is bleached and dead, although I did get to swim amongst some small Black Tip Reef Sharks.
Fishing boats heading out to sea at sunset at Pantai Tengah.
The rather unimpressive Black Sand Beach on the north island.
I had a chance to explore the one of the local hospitals during my stay.  The facilities were surprisingly modern and of high-standards.
