Firenze - March 2001
Firenze (Florence) is one of my favorite European cities.  I was able to see the Uffizi, the Italian National Art Museum), and all of the great pre-Renaissance to Baroque works that I studied in college.  Seeing Botticelli's Venus up close made the whole visit worthwhile.  The Florence Cathedral was equally inspiring.  Don't get me started on how great the food was.
The Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge).  This has stood over the Arno since Roman times.  The commander of the retreating German forces defied orders and refused to destroy the bridge, instead levelling the surrouding buildings to delay the Allied advance.
The doors of the baptistry of the Florence Cathedral.  These are replicas of the famous original design by Ghiberti that set a new standard for realism in sculpture.
A replica of Michaelangelo's "David" just outside Uffizi.
Standing just downstream of the Ponte Vecchio on the Ponte San Trinita.
The famous Duomo of the Florence Cathedral.  It was designed by Brunelleschi, employing a unique double-shell contruction, allowing stand-alone construction.
A statue of Dante Allegheri is one of many scholars lining the Uffizi's central plaza.
Having a five-dollar Coke at one of the many tourist-trap cafes in the Piazza San Lorenzo.
The entryway to the Florece Cathedral. This photo does not do justice to its intricacy.
