1.Write an example sentence for each of the following syntactic construction.
a. Intransitive verb (ergative)
Is something burning?
b. Intransitive verb (change of state verb)
John becomes a syntactic expert.
c. Intransitive verb with two dependents
Everybody has his own way of thinking.
d. Transitive verb with two dependents
Paolo left Italy this morning.
e. Transitive verb with three dependents
Paolo left Paola some money this morning.

2. Correct the following simple sentences and explain briefly why they are not acceptable.
a. *The man cleaned.
'clean' is a transitive verb. It requires two noun phrases as its dependents. The first dependent precedes it and has the agentive case, the second dependent following it and having the accusative case. The sentence will be acceptable if a second noun phrase is stacked after the verb, i.e. The man cleaned his room.

b. *The woman was cried by her daughter.
'Cry' is an intransitive verb. The intransitive verb can have only one dependent which has the agentive case. Therefore, the intransitive verb could not be passivized. The passive construction is the structure that the noun phrase that has the accusative case is placed in the subject position. The sentence may read 'The woman cried' or 'Her daughter cried'.

c. *The man gave a chocolate bar.
'Give' is a ditransitive verb. A ditransitive verb requires three dependents, one preceding it and two following it. The sentence will be acceptable if the second noun after the verb is added. For example, The man gave his child a chocolate bar.
