No Finite Verb
- A friend of mine shown up with her modern short hair style. (showed
up/shows up)
- Mom buying me a brand new blanket for this long-lasting freezing winter.(bought,
is buying)
- A Finite verb is
the verb that changes in its form according to the time of the action
or the number of the subject who does the action.
Adjective Clauses
- He has long round legs that everyone laughs at him.
- He has long round legs that everyone laughs at.
- Look at the verb
in the adj cls, “laughs” needs an object, but in this context,
the legs are what people laugh at, not him. There are two objects for
one verb here.
Or you can say…
- If the speaker wants to say that people laugh at him because of his
legs, by using the adj cls, she can say
– He has long round legs that makes everyone laugh at him.
- ‘That’ becomes the subject of the verb and laugh at has
‘him’ as its object.
Noun + Noun
- Generally when a head noun, the noun that carries the most important
meaning, is modified by another noun, the modifier noun is in a singular
form.
- The service is
available 24 hours a day.
- The hotel offers a 24-hour laundry service.
– My lovely
brown-eyes cat died two years ago.
– My lovely brown-eyed cat died two years ago.
– Anna was educated in the home school system.
– Guinea pigs become popular house pets.

N: A red-haired girl
Wrong Head Noun
- Be careful not to write a wrong head noun. The noun that comes last
in the sequence and is closest to the verb is the head noun.

2. Weekend women’s magazine
N’s + N
- When the head noun appears to belong to the noun that it modifies,
the form may change to N’s + N.
- CLEO is the most
popular weekly hi-so women’s magazine.
- The men’s shoes are on the rack to the left of the ladies’
shoes.
- Anna was on the cover of a weekly women’s magazine.
ADJ-Ned Noun
- This form is used especially when we describe a person by talking
about his/her part of the body.
– That long
red-haired woman golfer won the tournament.
– A long-legged blonde fell off the catwalk.
– A scar-faced man was suspected to rob the federal bank last
night.
– Note that ‘The long legs man attracts girls.’ is
incorrect.
Ving/V3 + Noun
- A verbal word can modifies a noun, but only a word and not a phrase
can be in front of the noun.
- He led an interesting
life.
- Her favorite well-worn book was placed by her pillow.
Verbal Words
- Only one verbal word and not a verbal phrase can be in the pre-nominal
position.
– That long-legged sitting in the garden French man is Anne’s
boyfriend.
– That long-legged French man sitting in the garden is Anne’s
boyfriend.
– Mom’s expensive bought at Central winter blanket disappeared.
– Mom’s expensive winter blanket bought at Central disappeared.
Wrong ADJ/ADV
- Watch the meaning of the adj or the adv when using it.
– Jennifer was trapped in her car which was stuck in deep cold
water.
– My mother bought me a brown wool blanket for this freezing cold
winter. (not deep cold winter)
– That man has got greatly long legs.
– That man has got beautiful long legs.
– That man has got incredibly/very long legs.
Punctuations in Series of ADJ
- Dawkes is a tall, dark and handsome man.
- A comma is required
between two or more of adjectives of the same class, such as opinion:
a wonderful, strange experience.
