Noun Clause

A noun clause is introduced by a 'Wh-Question Word', namely what, which, whose, when, where, why and how. 'A statement' which will become a noun clause is introduced by 'That', and a 'Yes-No question' begins with 'If or Whether'.

A noun clause can function as:

1. An object:

She insisted that we leave the exam room without telling us why.

2. A subject:

What surprised me most was to get an 'A' in German IV.

3. A subject complement (a piece of information that explains or describes the subject)

It is true that students who score the best will be selected to apply for the scholarship.
