IF Type I: Present: Real Condition: If + present simple {V1+(s/es)}, future simple(will+V1).
IF Type II: Present: Unreal Condition: If + past simple(V2), past future simple(would+V1).
IF Type III: Past: Unreal Condition: If + past perfect(had+V3), past future perfect(would have+V3).

 

1. Rice usually gets sticky when you put too much water in it.
If you put too much water in it, rice usually gets sticky. or

If you..., rice will get sticky.

The time frame is PRESENT. The condition can happen.

2. Services may be increased. Taxes, therefore, may go up.
If services are increased, taxes may go up.

The time frame is PRESENT. The modal 'may' indicates 'possibility'.

2. We won't write her as we thought we couldn't find her address.
We would write her if we could find her address.

The time frame is PRESENT. We do NOT write because we couldn't find her address.

3. Because they didn't meet Karen, they didn't like her.
They would have liked Karen if they had met her.

The time frame is PAST. This conditional clause is 'If Type 3'.

4. You didn't make your bed this morning. It looked bad when you got back in the afternoon. Your bed would have looked good if you had made your bed this morning.

Same as No. 3.

5. Most drivers don't obey the speed limit. Many accidents occur.
1. Many accidents will not occur if most drivers obey the speed limit.
or

2. Many accidents would not occur if most drivers obeyed the speed limit.

If you choose to use No. 1, which is 'If Type 1', you are an optimistic person.

If you choose to use No. 2, which is 'if Type 2', you are a pessimistice person. (You think it's impossible or unlikely that drivers will obey the speed limit.)

6. We are still using the same old system as we don't have money.
If we have money, we won’t be using the same old system.

The time frame is PRESENT.

The progressive aspect (won't be using) can be retained.

7. The neighbors finally quieted down. I didn’t call the police.
If the neighbors hadn’t quieted down, I would have called the police.

The time frame is PAST. This is 'If Type 3'.


8. Jane is so nervous. She drank so much coffee.
If Jane hadn’t drunk so much coffee, she wouldn’t be so nervous.

 

9. The meat is not done. This is not an excellent meal.
This would be an excellent meal if the meat were done.

10. You should listen to the questions carefully. And you'll answer them easily.
If you listen to the questions carefully, you’ll answer them easily.

11. I want to take you to the lecture at the art museum, but we have to finish our work first. If we didn’t have to finish our work first, we would take you to the lecture at the art museum .

12. I'm sure she wants to lose weight. The problem is she always eats sweets.
If she didn’t always eat sweets, she would lose weight.

13. I didn't check my paper before I sent it because I had little time.
If I had had more time, I would have checked my paper before I sent it.

14. I wanted to introduce Mr. Tanaka to my friend. But he is not single.
