 History of SNLC of Plano

For several years a few individuals taught basic computer classes at the Plano Senior Center to interested seniors. Both the software and hardware were outdated. During this time, the instructors discovered tremendous interest and enthusiasm among the senior students.

In an effort to upgrade and expand the program, the Director of the Plano Senior Center persuaded the City of Plano to purchase four new computers. The Director also contacted the Senior Net home office in San Francisco, California to determine the feasibility of establishing a Learning Center in Plano.

The Director knew that Senior Net's national influence and presence would be able to attract corporate sponsers to contribute money to establish Learning Centers. Texas Instruments is the corporate sponser of the Plano Senior Net Learning Center, and TI contributed generously to the establishment of the center.

Through their sponsership, as well as the City of Plano's, the Learning Center now has eight up to date computers, six printers, two scanners, two projectors, considerable software, suitable office furniture, access to the internet and the World Wide Web, established curricula and text for the courses, access to Senior Net's excellent website, as well as their national and local support. Also, a SeniorNet Website for the Plano Senior Center is active and up to date.

The Center's first Senior Net "Introduction to Computers" classes began June 22, 1999. The six classes could accomodate 36 students, who registered almost immediately, with a sizeable waiting list.

The next session consisted of 60 students, and the waiting list was even larger. The Center currently conducts four class sessions per year with 102 students attending each session. The list of people waiting, but unable to attend classes, increases with each session.

The Plano Senior Net Learning Center operates with 60 volunteer instructors, coaches, and administrative personnel.

The enthusiasm of the students has been tremendous.
