Getting Started:
To start, we will cover the program Outlook Express. This is the basic email program that comes with Windows 95,98. Once you have performed the setup of accounts for this program, you should easily be able to figure out advanced programs such as Lotus Notes and others.
Mail servers vary from one ISP to another and when setting up through a network system such as an office server you should ask your tech support for these important settings (Note: Most network mail systems are set up by the techs themselves or by the Network Administrator). In outlook express, to get to the account setup process you will have to go under tools and select on accounts. This should open up a folder showing first a list of mail servers and containing other tabulated options. You should first select on mail and then new account.
In doing so, your ISP should have provided you with the information you'll need, you will be asked to give this account a name. For example, if this were through BellSouth, you would want to probably just name it, "BellSouth". It will also ask the name you would like shown when sending and
receiving mail. This should be your name or internet call sign.
You then proceed to supplying the actual email address such as, "[email protected]". This in no way should be left blank. Otherwise your account will not work.
Moving on, you are then asked your smtp server and pop3 server for checking and sending mail. This is especially when you will require the information your ISP supplied you. Bellsouth for instance should look like, "mail.city.bellsouth.net". Others are more elaborate by having both a smtp and a pop3 server using different settings. Netzero uses a mail server that looks like this, "smtp.netzero.net" for the smtp server and, "pop.netzero.net" for their pop3 server. Please use specifically what your own ISP supplies you with in order to make these settings.
After hitting enter and finishing out your account setup you should then hit the send and
receive button just to make sure your settings are working. Before I forget, during setup you will be asked your username and password for this account and are allowed to set the account to
remember your password. I suggest only checking the remember password option only if you are comfortable that
no one else should have access to your PC.
As always, I hope this has been helpful but should you have any unanswered questions please email: [email protected] and I should be able to walk you through it better. |
