This design retrofits a standard US M1 Carbine into a modern bullpup personal defense weapon (PDW).
The Hezi SM-1 updates the traditional M1 carbine design with new features found on modern assault rifles. Additions include a drop free magazine release, ergonomic fire controls, a new firing pin safety and ejection mechanism, and the ability to hold the bolt open after the last round is fired.
From the inital pictures and product literature, the Hezi SM-1 PDW certainly has potential. The integrated optics rail and ability to add on tactical accessories will make it very popular with the sport and law enforcement markets here in the US.
For those who take issue with the performance of the .30 M1 carbine cartridge, a 5.56mm version is currently in development.
Look for the Hezi SM-1 rifle in the United States by Fall 2003.
