Back Porch

Back in the days before
The eternal rest begun,
I sat down on my back porch
And I watched the setting sun.

I recall the days of glory
That quickly had gone by;
I had fulfilled my dreams
Before my time to die.

My glory days had brought me
Enormous amounts of pain;
Even at some times it seemed
I had everything to lose and nothing to gain.

But I still kept going on
And I endured all the pain;
Now I am retired
And I'm slowly going insane.

And when my days were numbered
I still kept going on,
And when I was eighty-five
I died here before dawn.

But I never let them put me down,
My soul was a burning torch;
I died here very happily
On my little back porch.
