Why Psi Delta was Founded

The Psi Delta chapter of Alpha Phi Omega was founded at the University of Maine at Machias for a variety of reasons. It all started when a few guys at UMM back in 1971 were looking at the current fraternities at the college and decided that they weren't exactly what they were looking for. They felt that hazing was an unnecessary part of becoming a fraternity brother. Also, they wanted a fraternity where anyone could become a brother. So, they searched around and sent away for literature about other fraternities around the country. After looking at the literature, they decided to found a service fraternity to help the community. Alpha Phi Omega was, and still is, the largest service fraternity in the nation. They decided that if they were going to start a fraternity, they might as well go with the largest, and form a chapter of APO at the University.

So, in October of 1971 they started the paperwork of founding the Psi Delta chapter of Alpha Phi Omega at UMM. By May of 1972, the work was completed, and on May 14th of that year, it became official. The charter members of the Psi Delta chapter of APO were initiated that evening by APO brothers from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In order to become brothers, the charter members had to perform a service within the community. They decided to clean up and restore the Revolutionary War Cemetary in Machias.

Since May 14, 1972, the Psi Delta chapter of Alpha Phi Omega at the University of Maine at Machias has performed many services for the community, and will continue to do so, well into the future.
