Lacrosse is steeped in tradition, and though today's participants use sticks of plastic and titanium rather than wood, the lacrosse stick symbolizes the historical significance of the game.

The game, like the stick itself, was developed by North American Indians as early as the15th century. Indians played the game not only for recreation, but also to settle tribal disputes and to toughen warriors for fighting.

Since 1834, lacrosse has evolved from the Indians baggataway into todays modern team sport in which players use a crosse (netted stick) to throw or bat a ball into a goal.
Mens lacrosse consists of 10 players to a team - 3 Attackers, 3 Mid-fielders, 3 Defenders, and a Goalie. Players try and move the ball in the direction of the opponents goal by carrying the ball in the crosse, passing to a teammate or by kicking it.

Todays modern lacrosse field is 110 yards long and 60 yards wide. Goals have 6 foot square openings with net backings and are 80 yards apart. Each goal is centered in a circle, 18 feet in diameter, called the goal crease. The Lacrosse stick for attackmen and midfielders is 40-42 inches long and for defensemen, the stick is 52-72 inches long.

High school lacrosse in Virginia is a rapidly growing sport. High School games are divided into four 12 minute periods. In the event of a tie at the end of regulation play, 4-minute sudden death overtime periods are played until a goal is scored.
