Parents'
Sense and Gems, Parenting is So Great, Parents Sharing Gossip, Parent Support
Group. Yes! That's us. Officially formed on 8th Nov 2002, the 200 or so
members are from diverse backgrounds with varied skills and experiences.
Yes, the number is small if you consider the student enrolment is more than
2000! But this has not deterred our committed group of parent volunteers (PVs) to provide a voice and platform for parents of TNS.

So
what are the goals of the PSG?
We live in a world where change is the only constant. As parents, we face many
challenges in getting our children through the education system. At the PSG,
we want to be able to influence this process in a positive way, by getting
more involved in school.
No, this does not mean taking over the teacher's duties. Getting involved
means providing useful feedback on the curriculum, CCA, security in school,
transportation and even the canteen food---- really, the entire gamut of
school life. Knowing what is being taught in school helps us to understand
the challenges facing our children, and hopefully makes us better parents.
But we do know our limitations. The PSG cannot tackle all these challenges.
We can only act as a catalyst for change. And hope our actions will encourage
other parents like you to contribute and share your experiences.

So
how can you help?
We need volunteers to control traffic and help children get to school safely.
We need them at the various gates/entrances to ensure that no strangers enter
the school. In the canteen during recess and before and after school. In the
library to help maintain order and in the loan of books etc. In the Learning
Support Programme, to help those with reading
difficulties. During Swimming Carnival and Sports Day, as judges and
timekeepers. At the Primary Four Lifeskill
Workshops, where students are taught certain basic skills.
That's a lot of help needed! Well, we also have the fun bits! Our annual
Mid-Autumn Festival, where we let our creative juices flow, informal
gatherings like our Chinese New Year potluck and lots more.
And of course we organise dialogues, forum and
talks, seminars with the principal and specialist speakers in the various
fields of education like exam stress and its management, multiple intelligence
etc.
So what's the reward in doing all this and in getting involved?
Absolutely none! It's the satisfaction we get from knowing that we have made
a difference to the lives of the students. How so?
It has been shown that students whose parents are involved in their education
do better in school - regardless of their socio-economic status, ethnic
backgrounds or their parents' education level.
They score higher grades, register better attendance and complete homework
more consistently. They exhibit more positive attitudes and behaviour. We could go on really, but we hope you are
convinced and would like to give it a go!
Go on, check us out and sign up today!
Take a few moments and ponder over this:
"Education is a joint responsibility, a shared adventure. To achieve
full results, we need to change the mindsets of teachers, students and
parents and the community. Close collaboration between school, home and
community will be essential" ..........
