Women in Music

Okay, I know it seems like, a given thing that Melissa is the queen of all
lesbian/bi/girly music. I, however, do not share that opinion. Don't get me wrong,
Melissa is okay, in her own right, but she's not all there is to music. I feel that
with many of these women listed here, either they're not too well known, or
their sexuality isn't known to the general public. There are (I'm sure), scores
more lesbian musicians out there, more than just Melissa, K.D., Ani, and the Indigos...
If you want info or pics on them, you'll have to look elsewhere; there are MANY
other places to go to for that. This page is simply designed to show a sampling of the
ones that don't get the spotlight that much, and I guess, since they're my favorites,
you'll get a taste of what I like to listen to. If you know of more, please, feel free
to let me know. I'd be happy to put up a profile and page for them.

Linda Perry

In my opinion this woman is truly gifted, to use the phrase properly; I feel
she is the most talented the field has to offer, although, sadly, not everyone
knows who she is (*sigh*). She must certainly be the most spirited. She writes not
only about herself and her experiences, but about issues that concern everyone,
and on a grander scale; she has a set of vocals that are astounding (she does a duet
with the Queen of rock, Grace Slick!!), and she plays guitar. She is writing and
singing on her own now (not a bad thing), since the group 4 Non Blondes is no more.
AND she's lovely to look at!! Linda's been around as long as Melissa
has, and she is just as openly lesbian; however, neither she nor her former group
have recieved as much pop or public recognition. I highly recommend you take notice
of this woman - where she's not been, she's on her way. If you listen to Pink,
you've already heard of her; she is on her "Missundaztood" album, doing guest vocals
(among other stuff) on "Lonely Girl". Apparently Pink has paid attention to her! She's
so inspiring (she is one of the inspirations behind the poem "Seattle" on the
poetry page - the lines "the melodies / of the years blend to compose / the
harmony of one" - and if you wanna know what that means, email me,
I'd be happy to explain). If you'd like to learn more about Linda, I've got pics
and sound bytes and a few links to her page and more on my Linda Perry index.

Natalie Merchant

Natalie is one of the most favored ladies in my book, as far as vocalists go.
Yet another nice woman to look at, this woman can write some awesome songs,
and is a heartfelt writer of poetry (click here to read one of hers). I've
included this former vocalist for 10,000 Maniacs because I have heard that
she is bisexual... anyone have any reliable sources where I can verify this?
Visit her official site and learn more about her here.
