summer's kiss:

citronella candles
and the play of their light
across the faces of my friends
huddled round the picnic table

smells of barbecue
mix on the breeze with the sounds
of dashboard confessional coming
from the radio underneath the patio

early august
and a soft evening rain has cooled
the temperature of the water
in the pool to a balmy 75

but we don’t care

we splash

we laugh

the burgers sizzle on the grill
the moon is rising
the stars are shining

summer’s kiss, so sweet
so sweet is this early-august evening

nothing matters
tonight stretches on before us like eternity
all we have is right now
and good friends

and watermelon dripping down our chins

and cold beer that goes down so smooth
so smooth

the patio lanterns flicker
the citronella candles dim
it’s late, so late!

the water is calm now
air has a chill
so quiet all around us
so sleepy and still
the night stretches on….

summer’s kiss, so sweet, so sweet
this early-august evening’s a summer’s kiss
so sweet, so sweet
