Hello again, everyone.  I can't say too much today, because I have to be in the lecture hall in about ten minutes.  So here we go.

Yesterday we headed off for a double-header trip to Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, and Gunston Hall, George Mason's home (notice both first names, Colleen, and think how nice George Sargent would sound for PJ's real name).  Both houses were absolutely beautiful, having been restored to pristine colonial condition.  The tour guides at both places were extremely knowledgeable, and I took plenty of pictures.

Today we had a treat of a different kind.  We were taken to two houses near Stratford, Mount Airy and Sabine Hall, that are still privately owned and lived in.  The owners of the houses, direct descendants of the builders in the 18th century, showed us around and told us some of the history of the homes.  The highlight had to be the silverware made for Robert "King" Carter that had the date of the repeal of the Stamp Act carved in the handles (that way he wouldn't have to pay the extra tax on them).

Everything has been going absolutely wonderfully, although I admit that I am looking forward to returning home.  I have been away from my wife and son for far too long.  However, this has truly been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we still have much to do over the course of the next 24 hours.  Much to learn and much to see, including our first opportunity to take pictures inside the Great House here at Stratford.

Thanks so much for all the replies you have sent to these emails.  It is great to know that everyone is enjoying them.  Take care of yourselves.

Paul
